Every month the committee awards the ‘Competitor of the Month’ award to someone who has achieved something great in their motor sport. It doesn’t have to be first place, sometimes overcoming adversity (or is that reliability?) is enough. We’ll send you a voucher for £20 too. Tell us what you’ve been up to each month by email.
- May Competitor Of The Month – Will Nicholls & Nick Broom
As motorsport restarted Will & Nick wasted no time in dusting down their new R5 Fiesta and filling their May bank holiday weekends by winning the Corinium Stages at the beginning of May and following up with another win on the Red Dragon IT Stages last weekend, a fantastic performance. Well done both.
- December Competitor Of The Month – Rob Swann
Following on from winning the HammerTime 20 Rally in August and finishing runner up to Ken Block on the SOL Rally Barbados in October, Rob finished off his season by winning the Barbados Winter Rally (if you call 30 degrees winter!) in his Fiesta.
Well done Rob
- November Competitor Of The Month – Rob Collard
Rob Collard partnered by Sandy Mitchell won the final round of the British GT Drivers Championship at Silverstone, leading for most of the 3-hour race and in turn they won the championship outright in their Barwell Motorsport Lamborghini Huracan GT3, a fantastic achievement for Rob in his first season away from the BTCC
- October Competitors Of The Month – Angelica Fuentes, Rob Swann & Rob Dennis
SCMC competitors gave the committee a difficult job to select a competitor of the month for October, with club members producing fantastic results across the globe. Given the excellent results achieved it was decided that we’d have three winners of COTM for October.
Angelica’s annual trip to the weeklong La Carrera Panamericana produced 3rd o/all with Gabriel Perez in the Studebaker. The crew encountered a couple of mechanical issues along the way which restricted their opportunity to challenge for the win this year.
Following his HammerTime 20 Rally win in August, Rob returned to Barbados to compete on the SOL Rally Of Barbados with the view of continuing his winning streak on the island. Leading on the Saturday night, Rob made a couple of minor mistakes on Sunday that let Ken Block through into the lead with his brand new M-Sport Fiesta but 2nd o/all against this competition was still a fantastic result.
A mention should also be made of fellow SCMC members Chris Surman & Zowie Boiston who also made the trip to Barbados with their Subaru, unfortunately a fuel leak restricted their pace but they still finished 29th o/all, 1st in class.
Back in the UK, Rob Dennis was the outright winner of the Cotswold Stages, held at Down Ampney Airfield in Gloucestershire at the end of October. Conditions were very challenging during the day, with very heavy rain in the morning making driving conditions more difficult but Rob managed them better than the rest of the entry setting a number of fastest stage times during the day.
- September Competitor Of The Month – John Stone & Steve McNulty
On his first trip down from Lancashire for the CAR-nival, John was 9th fastest, 1st in class on Saturdays sprint and then followed that up 4th o/all with Steve McNulty alongside on the rally. John’s R5 Fiesta was in good company on the event run under Motorsport UK Covid-19 restrictions with many teams having their first opportunity to compete again in 2020.

- August Competitor Of The Month – Will Nicholls & Rob Swann
With motorsport activities restarting under Covid restrictions this has allowed some SCMC members to dust off their cars and start competing again which has given use some results to review for competitor of the month.
For August we’ve got joint COTM winners. Firstly, for Will Nicholls who took FTD at the Long Course sprint. The 4 wheel drive Subaru certainly suited the damp conditions but beating some of the more specialist sprint cars was an excellent result for Will.

Rob Swann choose sunny conditions for his win, Barbados in fact. In preparation for the Rally Of Barbados later in the year, Rob won the HammerTime 20 Rally in his Fiesta R5.
- February Competitor Of The Month – Rob Dennis
SCMC were well represented at Goodwood in early February for the annual stage event run by Southsea & Bognor Regis motor clubs. In favourable weather conditions Rob Dennis came out as the lead SCMC member finishing 3rd o/all in his superbly turned out Impreza.

- January Competitor Of The Month – Angelica Fuentes
Still recovering from the awards dinner, Angelica was at Brooklands Museum the next day to take part in the New Year Driving Tests organised by the VSCC (Vintage Sports Car Club). Driving a 1928 Peugeot Lockhart special, Angelica finished an excellent 3rd in class, don’t mention the lack of brakes !
- December Competitor Of The Month – Robert Swann
Robert Swann finished off 2019 in fine style by winning the SCMC/Craven MC Mini Tempest Rushmoor stage event between Christmas and the New Year. Running at the Rushmoor arena for the first time, Robert used his Fiesta on the short but demanding stages to win outright by over 40 seconds. A great way to finish 2019.
- November Competitor Of The Month
November joint winners of the Competitor(s) of the Month.
Declan Dear navigated Matthew Hirst to 1st overall on the Wyedean stages which in turn won them the 2019 Welsh Forestry stage championship, a fantastic achievement
Keith & Angelica Mainland braved the weather on their 1904 Orient to complete the London to Brighton veteran car run in a record 7 hours for the team.
Don’t forget that all monthly winners are automatically nominated for the prestigious Sutton & Cheam Motor Club Competitor of the Year Award
- October Competitor Of The Month
October saw two club members awarded COTM. Long term club member Richard Corney took his Nissan Sunny to 2nd in class at the Kempton Park Autosolo and Chris Surman followed in the tracks of the likes of Ogier & Tanak on the Wales Rally GB National rally and brought his Subaru home to an excellent finish on the challenging event.
