Competitors

Sutton & Cheam Motor Club boasts a large and varied membership made up of some of the top rally and race drivers in the country together with a large number of British, UK and even World Champions amongst their number.

Every month the committee awards the ‘Competitor of the Month’ award to someone who has achieved something great in their motor sport.

It doesn’t have to be first place, sometimes overcoming adversity (or is that reliability?) is enough. We’ll send you a voucher for £20 too. Tell us what you’ve been up to each month by email to Nigel Griffiths

  • May Competitor Of The Month – Declan Dear

Declan continued his excellent season co-driving for Matthew Hirst in his Fiesta by winning the Plains rally in North Wales in mid-May to put them in a commanding leading position in the Welsh Rally Championship. This follows on from excellent wins on the Rallynuts Stages and Rally North Wales Interclub earlier in the season.

  • April Competitor Of The Month – Will Nicholls

April was a busy month for Will in his R5 Fiesta competing on both sprints and a single venue rally. April started with his local sprint, the Sandown Sprint on the Isle Of Wight and local knowledge paid off, with fastest time from an entry of approx. 100 cars. The following weekend it was our own Long Course sprint with Will finishing as the first non-single seater car in 7th o/all and with a class win, just 0.1 of a second ahead of fellow SCMC member Rob Swann. It was back to the stages at the end of April for the Corinium Stages at Down Ampney Airfield with Will finishing 2nd o/all with regular co-driver Nick Broom in the hot seat.

  • March Competitor Of The Month – Darrell Taylor & Steve McNulty

Darrell had a very busy month in March in his Fiesta R5, competing on events most weekends. March started with a fantastic win on the Bovington Stages ably navigated by Steve McNulty and further top 10 results where then achieved on the Donington Stages and Tour Of Caerwent. A great way to start the season. Well done.

  • January Competitor Of The Month – John Stone
Mid-January saw the running of the 4th round of the Motorsport News Circuit Rally Championship at Brands Hatch. With a fantastic entry of R5 and high spec tarmac rally cars, John finished an excellent 2nd o/all in his Legend Fires R5 VW Polo.
  • December Competitor Of The Month – Rob Swann

Rob has recently obtained a Fiesta R5 and has started to put it to good use. In early December, Donnington Park was the venue for the Maxus Dukeries Rally and 8th o/all was the result as Rob got more familiar with the car. Late December was our own Mini Tempest event at Rushmoor and after a close battle with Richard Weaver,  Rob and Steve McNulty ended the day as runner up.

  • November Competitor Of The Month – Keith Mainland

Driving or maybe riding on his 1904 Orient, Keith completed his 6th London to Brighton veteran car run out of 10 starts, this being the 125th anniversary of the event. Not only did he finish the event, ably accompanied by various family and friends but he completed the run in his best time, getting to Brighton by 2:30pm, well before closing time!

  • October Competitor Of The Month – Joint Winners Paul Braddock & Declan Dear

Paul has been competing in local Sprints for over 15 years – the last 10 as a member of Sutton & Cheam. Always a contender in the ACSMC Sprint Championship, he has this year won the standard production car class in his Suziki Swift Sport – a class where no performance modifications are allowed.

Declan was again navigating for Matthew Hirst in his Evo IX on the Visit Conwy Cambrian Rally in North Wales and had an excellent run over some challenging WRC stages to finish 4th o/all against some more advanced R5 machinery.

    Well done to both competitors

  • September Competitor Of The Month – Rob Swann

September Competitor Of The Month – Rob Swann

Rob continues to mix his competitive outings between rallies and sprints with his Subaru WRC.  September saw the closed road event the Three Shires Stages with stages based around Ledbury. Rob finished an excellent 5th overall with only much more modern R5 machinery finishing ahead of him.

  • August Competitor Of The Month – Ian & Oliver Hucklebridge

After a day long battle with the Strakers, Ian & Oliver missed out on victory by 2 seconds in their first outing in the Darrian T90 GTR on the South Downs stages at Goodwood, so a victory in the new car can’t be far away. Steve McNulty was navigating for Darrell Taylor in his Fiesta R5 but unfortunately they had a troubled day but made up for it 2 weeks laterwith 2nd o/all on the Rainworth Skoda stages.

  • July Competitor Of The Month – John Stone
John just missed out on victory by 7 seconds at the JRT Enville Stages based at the Anglesey circuit in north Wales in late July. Navigated by his son Alex and using their regular Fiesta they had a day long battle with the eventual winner Robert Hughes.

  • May Competitor Of The Month – Will Nicholls & Nick Broom

As motorsport restarted Will & Nick wasted no time in dusting down their new R5 Fiesta and filling their May bank holiday weekends by winning the Corinium Stages at the beginning of May and following up with another win on the Red Dragon IT Stages last weekend, a fantastic performance. Well done both.

  • December Competitor Of The Month – Rob Swann

Following on from winning the HammerTime 20 Rally in August and finishing runner up to Ken Block on the SOL Rally Barbados in October, Rob finished off his season by winning the Barbados Winter Rally (if you call 30 degrees winter!) in his Fiesta.

    Well done Rob
